Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial

Dedicated: 1937  |  Location: France  |  Burials: 1565  |  Missing in Action: 974  |  Acres: 7.50

From its location on the slope of Mont Valerian, Suresnes American Cemetery provides a panoramic view of Paris. Originally established in 1917 by the Graves Registration Service of the Army Quartermaster Corps, the cemetery later became the final resting place for the remains of WWII dead, as well. The remains of 1,541 Americans who died in World War I and 24 unknown dead of World War II lie here.

Many of the World War I dead buried here died of wounds or illness  in particular, the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 – in hospitals located in Paris.  In addition, the names of 974 buried or lost at sea from World War I are recorded on the chapel walls. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.
