St. Mihiel

St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial

Dedicated: 1937  |  Location: France  |  Burials: 4153  |  Missing in Action: 284  |  Acres: 40.50

Located near Thiaucourt, France, not far from the battle site of Verdun, the St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial is one of fourteen cemeteries dedicated to World War I administered in Europe by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The cemetery is the final resting place for fifteen women who served and died during the Great War. The majority of those buried here died during the St. Mihiel offensive of September 15-18, 1918. The battle marked the first major offensive for inexperienced American troops and was part Pershing's plan to break through the German lines and capture the fortified city of Metz. Retreating Germans, attempting to reach Paris, were pushed back during the attack at the Saint-Mihiel salient (or bulge).

The cemetery is laid out in four equal quadrants by paths lined with linden trees. At the cemetery's center is a large sundial surmounted by an American eagle. A statue of a World War I soldier, sculpted by Paul Manship, stands at the end of the western axis, while a semi-circular overlook with a sculpted victory vase marks the end of the eastern axis.
